Thyme is constantly hyped as a home remedy for colds, especially for coughs, sniffles, and persistent mucus! But how should our thyme balm actually be used correctly, and what should be considered, especially for the little ones? Here you will find all the important information about its effects and application on the chest, back, and soles of the feet.
What is thyme balm good for?
Thyme balm is primarily recommended for classic cold symptoms such as coughing, sniffles, and persistent mucus. The essential oils, especially thymol from thyme, can have expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. These properties make the balm a gentle support for respiratory problems, especially when you want to rely on natural home remedies for children.
Application of thyme balm for children and adults
Aromatherapy care, such as our thyme balm, should always be used sparingly and only if you already have experience with essential oils, as some people are allergic to them. For children (from 3 years of age) and adults, it is recommended to massage a small amount of the balm onto the chest, back, or feet. For children aged 3 and up, we always recommend testing skin compatibility with a small amount first.
Our tip: Apply the balm before bed so it can fully unfold its effects overnight. A warm blanket or socks will enhance the balm's effect, as the warmth releases the essential oils.
Application of thyme balm for infants and babies – when and how safely?
A frequently asked question is whether thyme balm can also be used for babies and infants. However, special caution is required here.
In the first few months of life, infants should not come into contact with essential oils, as these can irritate sensitive skin or cause breathing problems. From six months of age, after consulting with a pediatrician, a small amount of thyme balm can be applied to the soles of the feet. Here, the baby's skin is somewhat thicker, which slows down the absorption of active ingredients and allows for a gentler effect. However, application for babies and toddlers under three years of age should always be discussed with a medical professional beforehand.
Thyme balm during pregnancy & breastfeeding – what should be considered?
Good news, our thyme balm is recommended by midwives and is ideal for all pregnant women as natural aromatherapy care! Pregnant women can apply the balm to their chest or back up to twice a day. However, since essential oils in high concentrations could potentially induce contractions, you should always use only a small amount here too.
Application is also possible during breastfeeding. However, you should not apply it before breastfeeding and again, only in small amounts, so that the essential oils do not irritate your baby during feeding.
