Thyme is always hyped as a home remedy for colds, especially for coughs, runny noses and stuck mucus! But how is our thyme balm actually used correctly and what should you pay attention to, especially with the little ones? Here you can find out everything you need to know about how it works and how to use it on the chest, back and soles of the feet.
What is thyme balm good for?
Thyme balm is recommended especially for classic cold symptoms such as coughs, runny noses and stuck mucus. The essential oils, especially the thymol from thyme, can have expectorant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. These properties make the balm a gentle aid for respiratory problems, especially if you want to use natural home remedies for children.
Thyme Balm Application in Children and Adults
Aroma care, such as our thyme balm , should always be used sparingly and only if you already have experience with essential oils, as some people are allergic to essential oils. For children (from 3 years) and adults, it is recommended that you massage a small amount of the balm onto the chest, back or feet. For children from 3 years, we recommend always testing skin compatibility with a small amount first.
Our tip: Apply the balm before going to bed so that it can develop its full effect overnight. A warm blanket or socks enhance the effect of the balm, as the heat releases the essential oils.
Thyme balm application in infants and babies – from when and how safe?
A frequently asked question is whether thyme balm can also be used on babies and infants. However, special caution is required here.
In the first few months of life, babies should not come into contact with essential oils, as these can irritate sensitive skin or cause respiratory problems. From six months onwards, after consultation with the pediatrician, a small amount of thyme balm can be applied to the soles of the feet. The baby's skin is a little thicker here, which slows down the absorption of the active ingredients and allows for a gentler effect. However, use on babies and toddlers under three years of age should always be discussed with medical professionals beforehand.
Thyme balm during pregnancy and breastfeeding – what should you bear in mind?
Good news, our thyme balm is recommended by midwives and is ideal as a natural aroma care product for all pregnant women! Pregnant women can apply the balm to their chest or back up to twice a day. However, since essential oils in high concentrations could potentially trigger contractions, you should only use a small amount here.
It can also be used while breastfeeding. However, you should not apply it before breastfeeding and only in small amounts so that the essential oils do not irritate your baby while breastfeeding.
