After an operation, such as a C-section, it is essential to take good care of the resulting scar. Proper scar care can support wound healing, prevent scar overgrowth, and ensure that the skin becomes soft and supple again. In this article, you will learn when and how to start scar care and which products are best suited for it.
When should I start scar care after surgery?
The optimal time for scar care depends on when the wound has superficially healed. Generally, you can start care and gentle massages as soon as the wound is externally closed and dry — without open areas or signs of infection.
Even after a C-section, you should definitely wait until wound healing is completely finished. The stitches or staples are usually removed after about a week. After about 3 weeks, the scars are usually well-healed superficially.
Before starting scar care, you should, for safety's sake, get the green light from your treating doctor. If the wound is not yet closed, you should keep it clean according to your doctor's instructions and, if necessary, disinfect it with suitable wound disinfectant.
Scar Care: How to
So-called scar massages can make the tissue more supple by increasing blood circulation, relieve feelings of tension, and prevent scar overgrowth. The body's natural wound healing is supported.
Massage the scar with a moisturizing cream and slow, circular movements along and directly on the scar. You should ideally repeat this twice a day for 5 to 10 minutes. You should proceed with particular care and not overstretch your skin.

Which cream is suitable for scar care?
Choosing the right cream plays a significant role in scar care. Moisturizing products are particularly recommended. Also, make sure that the cream is free from irritating substances, allergens, and perfume. Lanolin and calendula should also not be included, as these ingredients could irritate the skin.
If you are now wondering which product from the med series is best for this, then we can confidently recommend our med Basic Cream. It absorbs quickly and is particularly rich and moisturizing. Like all other med products, we completely avoid fragrances and rely exclusively on hypoallergenic ingredients.
In addition to moisturizing, the use of silicone patches can be useful to keep the scar continuously moist.
Further tips for scar care
- Keep the scar clean: Make sure the scar always stays clean to prevent infections, even if the wound is already superficially closed.
- Protect from the sun: Fresh scars are particularly sensitive to UV rays. Therefore, always use a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) or protect the affected area with clothing or a plaster from direct sunlight.
- Do not scratch: Even if the scar itches – resist the urge to scratch! This can delay healing and lead to a more noticeable scar.
- If in doubt, have it checked: If you notice signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, pain, or discharge of pus, it is important to see a doctor promptly.
