What does "dermatologically tested" stand for?

Statements such as "dermatologically tested" or "clinically tested" can be found on more and more cosmetic products. However, not every one of these labels is a scientifically tested seal of quality. We will explain what the term "dermatologically tested" means, why there are seals of quality and how a dermatological test is carried out.

What does "dermatologically tested" mean?

According to the EU Cosmetics Regulation, "dermatologically tested" means that a product has been tested on humans under the supervision of a dermatologist. No standardized procedures or quality requirements are required. The exact conduct of the test is at the discretion of the cosmetics manufacturer or the institute commissioned by the manufacturer to carry out the testing.

What is the purpose of seals of approval or quality seals?

Many cosmetics manufacturers decide to have the skin compatibility of their products dermatologically confirmed and to mark this dermatological testing on their products. Such seals of approval or quality seals are not required under the EU Cosmetics Regulation, but they ensure greater comparability and consumer safety. We at boep also attach great importance to the skin compatibility of our products. Therefore, all of our products have been tested by independent dermatologists - with the result that the skin compatibility of our products is awarded the original Dermatest® seal as "very good".

The Dermatest seal

What is the Dermatest seal?

The Dermatest seal is a scientific seal of quality, whereby products that come into contact with the skin are tested independently of the manufacturer. The "Dermatest® Guarantee" seal is based on an epicutaneous test under dermatological control. As a rule, the test substance is applied to a self-adhesive patch and applied to the test subject under closed (occlusive) conditions.

This intensifies the contact and at the same time limits it locally and in time. After 24, 48 and 72 hours, the skin is then examined for reactions and tolerance. 30 test subjects are usually used for an epicutaneous test. About a third of these have sensitive skin. If no toxic-irritant reactions are observed, the test is considered successful and the manufacturer receives the quality seal. The seal on the product packaging shows the month and year of the test. If something changes in the recipe or composition of the product, a new test must be carried out.

This is how the “Dermatest” works

1. Assignment

A product manufacturer commissions Dermatest to test its product. The scientists at Dermatest create an individual concept for the optimal testing of the product.

2. Study

The application test using the patch test is carried out.

3. Safety assessment

The skin is examined and evaluated for toxic-irritant reactions.

4. Report & Seal

A report is prepared with all relevant information about the product, the course and the result of the study. If the product passes the test successfully, the manufacturer receives the "Dermatest® Guarantee" seal. The consumer recognizes that the cosmetic product is safe to use and of high quality.

We are of course very pleased with the positive test results of our boep products and continue to work hard to ensure that our products always meet the highest quality standards.
