Wind and weather creams – what are they good for?
Cold air and wind, especially in the cold winter months, can quickly dry out the skin, which can lead to feelings of tightness and cracking. Wind and weather creams are designed to prevent exactly that. They moisturize the skin and, thanks to their rich formulation, form a protective barrier on the skin that prevents further moisture loss. Wind and weather creams are an indispensable protection in the cold season, especially for sensitive skin, such as babies and children.
Why is wind and weather protection so important for babies and children?
The skin of babies and children is particularly sensitive, especially in the cold season. The reason: their skin is much thinner, which means that it offers less protection and barrier function than the skin of adults and can also lose moisture more quickly.
Another factor is the immature production of sebum: the hormonal system that regulates sebum production and ensures the formation of a protective fatty film only develops during childhood. Without this natural protection, babies and children are more susceptible to dry skin and the associated redness or cracks caused by wind and cold.
Background to the test - what was tested?
Ökotest tested a total of 18 wind and weather creams for children and babies from drugstores, supermarkets and the Internet. Among them were eight certified natural cosmetic products. The aim of the study was to evaluate products based on their ingredients, the environmental friendliness of their packaging and possible contamination by allergenic substances. Price-performance ratios were also taken into account.

ingredients
When it came to ingredients, the focus was on questionable substances that can be problematic for the sensitive skin of babies and children. The products tested had to ensure that limit values for questionable substances were not exceeded. Important: The limit values used by Öko-Test are often stricter than the legal requirements. The following were rated particularly critically:
- Paraffins and mineral oil residues (MOAH): These come from petroleum and can impair the skin barrier. MOAH are also suspected of being carcinogenic.
- Heavy metals such as arsenic and lead: These can occur as contaminants and pose a health risk above certain quantities.
- Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT): A preservative that may have hormone-like effects.

Products advertised as perfume-free were particularly tested to see whether they really do not contain any fragrances. Some fragrances can trigger allergies in very sensitive skin.
Packaging
The environmental friendliness of the packaging was also assessed. For example, it was checked whether the manufacturer used recycled plastic and avoided unnecessary packaging.
Price
But not only the quality, but also the price was examined. The price differences between the products tested were considerable. It became clear that good quality does not necessarily have to be expensive.
