How to playfully integrate basic therapy into everyday life

Your child suffers from neurodermatitis and you are wondering how you can playfully integrate basic therapy into everyday life?

Dr. Lisanne Drerup has collected valuable tips and information for you in this blog article. She is a dermatologist and co-founder of MonsterShack, a company that develops apps that motivate children to adopt healthy habits playfully and through storytelling. ItchyMonsters is the first app from MonsterShack. As a mother of a daughter, she understands the challenges of helping children with skin care, especially with neurodermatitis. With her expertise and experience, she focuses on innovative, child-friendly solutions to improve the treatment of neurodermatitis.

Neurodermatitis in children: Why proper skin care is so crucial

Neurodermatitis is one of the skin conditions that can strongly affect family life. When the skin constantly itches, is dry, and becomes inflamed, it not only drains the affected child's energy but also yours as parents. Many nights are restless, applying cream becomes a daily test of patience, and the thought of when the next flare-up will occur always lingers.

Therefore, it is all the more important to consistently care for the skin. Basic therapy means not just care, but is a central component of the treatment of neurodermatitis. It supports the skin barrier, provides the skin with much-needed moisture, and helps prevent new inflammations and flare-ups. Those who apply early and regular care can do a lot to relieve the symptoms in the long term.

Why is skin so sensitive with neurodermatitis?

Healthy skin usually has a natural barrier and protective function: It retains moisture and keeps irritants out. However, with neurodermatitis, this protective mechanism does not work as usual. The skin loses water faster, becoming dry and permeable. At the same time, external substances, such as allergens or irritants, can penetrate more easily and trigger inflammation.

This is precisely why consistent skin care – preferably twice a day – is so important: it provides the skin with the moisture and the nourishing fats from the outside that it lacks. The goal behind it is to strengthen the skin's barrier function – so that it becomes less dry and more resistant, and the itching subsides.

Basic therapy: the daily care that makes a difference

"Basic therapy" might sound a bit technical. But it basically means nothing more than regularly and appropriately applying cream to the skin. And not just when the skin is particularly irritated, but ideally every day. Because: Even in supposedly "good" phases, where the skin appears almost healthy, the skin needs the nourishing active ingredients from the outside to delay the next flare-up as much as possible. Studies also show that regular application of cream stabilizes the skin in the long term - and thus also makes flare-ups less frequent and milder. Thus, daily care can also help to reduce the need for anti-inflammatory medications.

Which care
is suitable for my child?

Which skin care is suitable for your child depends on age, but also on the condition of the skin.

  • For very dry skin, rich creams or ointments are recommended, which intensely re-fatten the skin.

  • If the skin is only slightly dry, lighter creams or lotions may be more comfortable.

  • If the skin is acutely inflamed during an eczema flare-up, moisturizing is the priority.

Glycerin, a moisturizer that gently supports the skin without irritating it, is particularly well-tolerated by sensitive children's skin. Urea can also help but should only be used from about two years of age and in low concentrations (up to 5%), as the cream can otherwise cause stinging. It is important to avoid irritating additives such as fragrances, alcohol, or certain preservatives. Gentle formulations specially developed for sensitive children's skin are the best choice here.

Healthy skin – also from within

Well-cared-for skin can also better defend itself against harmful germs. Especially with neurodermatitis, the so-called skin microbiome - i.e., the natural colonization of the skin with good bacteria - plays an important role. If this balance is disturbed, inflammation can occur more quickly.

With proper care, this balance can be promoted. Well-hydrated skin is less prone to colonization by unwanted germs such as Staphylococcus aureus – a bacterium often associated with neurodermatitis flare-ups.

How do I get my child to
apply cream?

Lovingly motivating children and integrating them into healthy routines - especially for things like daily creaming is often not so easy. Children are rarely convinced by logical arguments and rules. However, with small tricks and a lot of empathy, basic neurodermatitis care can become a firm habit:

  • Involve digital helpers: With the ItchyMonsters App, applying cream becomes a captivating journey. Playful challenges and stories encourage interest and help children implement their daily care routine with joy.

  • Create rituals: Fixed times, such as after bathing or before bedtime, provide security.

  • Rewards in moderation: Small stickers or a care calendar can motivate them.

  • Let them do it themselves: Children enjoy applying cream – it strengthens their sense of control.

The most important thing remains: stay calm, reduce pressure, and make care time a shared time.

Conclusion:

Regular creaming is crucial for strengthening the skin barrier and helps alleviate the symptoms of neurodermatitis. If you show your child early on how important this routine is and involve them in the care, they will eventually understand the importance of this healthy habit. Gradually, creaming will become as natural as brushing teeth, contributing long-term to your child's well-being and quality of life.
