Pregnancy Classes – Which Ones Are Really Useful?

Pregnancy is an exciting time – and suddenly there are countless courses designed to help you prepare for birth and the time with your baby. From hypnobirthing to baby care and yoga: the range of options is huge. But which courses are truly useful?

Here you'll find out which courses can really help you – and which you can consider optional.

1. Childbirth preparation class – the most important preparation

A childbirth preparation class is one of the most useful courses during pregnancy. It usually takes place in the last trimester of pregnancy and helps you and your partner mentally and physically prepare for birth.

In such a course, you will learn, for example:

  • how a birth can proceed

  • which breathing and relaxation techniques can help

  • what pain relief options are available

  • how your partner or companion can support you

  • what to expect in the postpartum period

Many parents report that a childbirth preparation class gives them confidence and reduces anxieties about birth. You can also meet other expectant parents there – often leading to connections that remain valuable after the birth.

Good to know: The costs for childbirth preparation classes are usually covered by health insurance for pregnant women.

2. Postnatal exercise class – important for your body after birth

After birth, your body needs time to recover. This is where the postnatal exercise class comes in. It is usually recommended about 6 to 8 weeks after birth (often a little later after a C-section).

In a postnatal exercise class, the focus is primarily on the pelvic floor, which is heavily stressed during pregnancy and childbirth. Through targeted exercises, you can:

  • strengthen your pelvic floor again

  • stabilize your abdominal and core muscles

  • prevent complaints such as back pain or incontinence

  • rebuild your body step by step

Many courses allow you to bring your baby – making it easy to integrate the class into your daily routine.

Here too, health insurance usually covers the costs if you attend the course within the first few months after birth.

3. Other courses – nice, but not a must

In addition to these two central courses, there are many other offerings. They can be a nice addition, but are not absolutely necessary.

Popular examples include:

  • Pregnancy yoga or pregnancy gymnastics

  • Baby care courses

  • Breastfeeding preparation courses

  • First aid courses for babies and toddlers

If a topic particularly interests you or gives you additional security, such a course can certainly be worthwhile.

Conclusion

The range of courses for pregnancy and baby is large – but you don't have to do everything.

In our opinion, two courses are particularly useful:

  • Childbirth preparation class before birth, to prepare well for birth and the postpartum period

  • Postnatal exercise class about 6-8 weeks after birth, to strengthen and support your body

Everything else you can decide according to your own needs. It's best to listen to your intuition – because every pregnancy and every family is unique. 🤍
