Lipedema is more than just an aesthetic challenge – it is a chronic disease that affects many women. Primarily the legs, and less commonly the arms, are affected: excessive fat accumulates in the subcutaneous tissue, which can lead to pain, a feeling of heaviness, tenderness, and swelling. There is currently no cure – but a holistic therapy can at least alleviate the symptoms. In severe cases, affected individuals often opt for surgical treatment, a so-called liposuction.
If lipedema is suspected, it is advisable to seek advice from a specialized clinic. We had the opportunity to speak with the team at Lipoclinic Dr. Heck – with their experience from over 2,500 operations per year, they shared valuable tips for skin care after liposuction and explained how our basic cream can optimally support regeneration after surgery.
How does liposuction work?
Preparation begins before the surgery: a flat-knit compression garment must be worn for six weeks. It stimulates lymph flow, decongests the tissue – but it also severely dries out the skin.
During the liposuction itself, 8 to 12 small incisions are made depending on the surgical area. The diseased fat is specifically suctioned out using a water-jet device. A compression garment is reapplied immediately in the operating room and must then be worn for a full eight weeks – six weeks around the clock (23/7), followed by two weeks during the day.
Post-operative skin care – when and how?
When can you apply cream after liposuction?
The first shower is allowed two days after the surgery. From then on, cream can be applied very carefully around the incision sites. You can start with full moisturizing care as soon as the incision sites have completely closed and the stitches have been removed – usually about 7 to 10 days after the surgery.
How often should cream be applied?
The skin peels, bruises are highly visible, everything feels tight – that's why regular care is so important! A basic cream for moisturizing should be used 1–2 times daily to soothe the skin, provide moisture, and support the healing process.
How long does the skin need special care?
The healing process takes up to a year – that's how long it takes for the body to fully regenerate. The first eight weeks in compression are particularly intense, as the skin dries out severely and is put under a lot of strain.
Individual scar care can be helpful: gently massage, apply cream, possibly use special scar products – all to keep the skin supple and minimize scar formation.
Another aspect: Many patients require multiple procedures – usually three on the legs (twice on the thighs and once on the lower legs) and once on the arms. Each surgery means new incision sites, new healing phases – and therefore continuous skin care.
Movement, nutrition, and mindfulness – further tips for a successful healing process
In addition to regular skin care, movement is paramount. It stimulates lymph flow and supports healing. Gentle movement, regular walks, light exercise – but always within what feels good.
Also important: sufficient breaks, elevating the legs, eating healthily. After liposuction, the metabolism is in flux, and the body is more susceptible to weight gain – making it all the more important to listen to yourself.
