In the basic care for neurodermatitis, the selection of ingredients in skincare products is crucial. Avoiding harmful substances and specifically choosing well-tolerated ingredients can have a positive impact on skin regeneration.
In this blog post, we take a close look at five ingredients that should be avoided with neurodermatitis, as well as five good ingredients that can support the basic care of neurodermatitis and skin regeneration.
5 ingredients you should avoid if you have neurodermatitis
The following five ingredients should be avoided by people with very sensitive skin due to their high allergenic potential:
Fragrances
After nickel, fragrances are the second most common triggers of contact allergies and can particularly cause allergic reactions in people with very sensitive skin. Therefore, for skin prone to neurodermatitis, it is better to avoid fragrances and perfumes in cosmetic products.
Lanolin
Lanolin, also known as wool wax, is the secretion from the sebaceous glands of sheep, obtained during the processing of sheep's wool. Due to its moisture-binding properties, it is often used in cosmetics to support wound healing. However, in people with chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as neurodermatitis, lanolin can also cause an allergic reaction, which is why you should avoid daily use of lanolin.
Parabens
Parabens are artificially produced preservatives found particularly in cosmetic products, food, or medicines. They are among the ingredients that can have a high allergenic potential, so it's better to choose from the many products that already do without parabens.
Propylene Glycol
Propylene Glycol is a plasticizer and emulsifier that can dry out the skin. Especially with neurodermatitis, where the skin barrier is often weakened, propylene glycol can additionally burden the skin and impair the healing process.
Sulfates
Sulfates are among the particularly aggressive surfactants. Due to their fat-dissolving, highly foaming cleansing effect, they are also frequently used in the cosmetic industry. While they are often unproblematic for normal skin, they can attack the already damaged acid mantle of the skin in patients with neurodermatitis.
5 good ingredients for neurodermatitis
The following 5 ingredients have a low allergenic potential and can also help to rebalance the disturbed skin barrier and moisturize the skin.
Vegetable Glycerin
Vegetable glycerin has valuable, moisturizing properties and helps the skin retain moisture without irritating it.
Evening Primrose Oil
Evening primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help reduce itching and redness — symptoms that people with neurodermatitis struggle with.
Squalane
Squalane is a natural, moisturizing ingredient that makes the skin supple without clogging pores. It supports the skin barrier and can help strengthen the skin's natural protective film. Squalane is similar to the skin's own sebum and is therefore particularly well tolerated by people with very sensitive skin.
Bisabolol
Bisabolol, derived from chamomile, soothes the skin and also has anti-inflammatory effects. Bisabolol also provides moisture and counteracts skin dehydration.
Almond Oil
Almond oil is generally considered very well tolerated by the skin and has a low allergenic potential. It is rich in vitamin E and has soothing properties. It also helps to nourish the skin, reduces feelings of tightness, and generally contributes to skin regeneration.
Our med care series for very sensitive skin and problem skin therefore avoids ingredients with high allergenic potential and fragrances. Instead, our products rely on clean formulations and natural active ingredients that are well tolerated by people with neurodermatitis. Our motto: less is (almost always) more.
