Proper cuticle care – Tips for dry, cracked cuticles

Cuticles are often underestimated – yet they fulfill an essential protective function. Intact cuticles form a natural barrier against germs, bacteria, and pathogens. But what should you do if your cuticles are dry, cracked, or inflamed? In this article, you will learn about the most common causes of torn cuticles and how to properly care for them.

Why are cuticles so important?

The cuticle (medically: eponychium) protects the sensitive nail bed from the penetration of germs. If it is damaged – for example, by dehydration, improper or excessive care, or mechanical irritation – painful inflammations can occur. Therefore, gentle and, above all, regular care of the cuticles is essential for long-term healthy nails.

Causes: Why do cuticles tear?

There are many reasons why cuticles dry out or tear. Often, it's everyday habits that damage the delicate skin around the nail. Typical causes include:

  • Lack of moisture
  • Frequent hand washing and frequent use of disinfectants
  • Contact with aggressive cleaning agents (e.g., at work or at home)
  • Nail polish and nail polish remover, especially nail polish remover with acetone
  • Improper nail care, such as cutting cuticles or nail biting
  • Cold and dry heating air in winter
  • Nutrient deficiency, especially of biotin (Vitamin B7), zinc, iron, and Vitamin A
  • Skin diseases like neurodermatitis, psoriasis, or nail fungus
  • Diabetes mellitus

How to properly care for cuticles – here's how!

Healthy cuticles primarily need one thing: moisture. With these tips, you can effectively protect your cuticles:

1. Never cut cuticles

As tempting as it may be: Never cut your cuticles with scissors or nail clippers! This injures the skin and makes it susceptible to germs. Instead, after showering or a hand bath, you can gently push them back with a stick or fingernail – but only if they are soft!

2. No picking or biting!

Keep your hands off picking at torn skin! On the contrary, this worsens the irritation and can lead to painful inflammations. You should also absolutely avoid nail biting or picking at your cuticles.

3. Moisture is key

Moisturizing creams or a rich balm are the most important care for dry cuticles. From our med series, we therefore recommend the med Hand Cream, med Base Cream or the med Balm. Gently massage the product in – preferably after washing your hands or before going to bed, so it can fully unfold its effect overnight.

4. Intensive care for cracked cuticles

If your cuticles are already cracked or inflamed, an overnight hand mask can also help: Apply a generous amount of med Hand Cream and protect your hands with cotton gloves. The cream can penetrate particularly well overnight, and you will see that your hands are noticeably softer the very next morning!

5. Balanced nutrition for healthy nails

Not only from the outside, but also from within, your body needs support for healthy skin and nails. Therefore, ensure a varied, balanced diet. The following vitamins influence your nail health:

  • Biotin (Vitamin B7) – strengthens skin, hair, and nails
  • Zinc – supports wound healing
  • Iron – important for cell regeneration
  • Vitamin A – ensures supple skin
