Dry lips? Care tips for winter

In winter, your skin is exposed to special challenges: cold and wind from outside, dry heating air from inside – all of this puts enormous strain on it. Especially the lips, which are almost always exposed to the elements unprotected, suffer from this. That's why you should give them a little more attention in winter. In this blog post, we explain what you can do about dry lips in winter and what you should look out for when choosing your lip care.

How the cold in winter affects your skin

The cold in autumn and winter causes the blood vessels in the skin to constrict to keep the body warm. As a result, the skin is generally less supplied with blood and receives less oxygen and nutrients. The result: the skin becomes drier, more brittle and loses elasticity.

In addition, the skin produces less sebum in the cold season, which leads to a loss of the natural lipid film that normally protects it from drying out. Since lips hardly have any sebaceous glands of their own, they become particularly chapped and cracked quickly.

What should I look out for when it comes to lip care in winter?

To prevent your lips from drying out in winter, the right care is crucial. Make sure to use a lip balm that is rich in nourishing ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter or natural oils. These ingredients help to keep the lips moisturised and at the same time protect them like a kind of cold protection from external influences.

Avoid products with alcohol or menthol if possible, as these ingredients can additionally dry out the lips. It is also important to drink enough water to moisturise the lips from within.

Dry lips with neurodermatitis

In people with neurodermatitis, the skin barrier is weakened. The cold, frequent temperature changes and the dry heating air contribute to the already weakened skin losing even more moisture, thereby intensifying itching, rashes and further skin dehydration. Intensive lip care with a high fat content, tailored to neurodermatitis, such as our med Balsam Mini, is therefore particularly important in winter and should become a firm part of your daily care routine.
