Probiotics for Atopic Dermatitis – Support from the Gut

In recent years, the importance of gut health for our general well-being has increasingly come to the forefront. This is because the condition of the gut flora has been proven to affect not only our skin but also numerous acute and chronic diseases. But can probiotics – beneficial bacteria that support gut flora – also help with neurodermatitis?

Imbalanced Gut Flora in Neurodermatitis

People with neurodermatitis often show changes in both their skin microbiome and gut microbiome. An imbalance in the gut flora – often characterized by a deficiency of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli – can be associated with a weakened immune system and chronic inflammatory skin reactions.

While the exact mechanism of probiotics is not yet fully understood, there is considerable evidence suggesting they can help restore the balance in the gut and skin microbiomes.

Probiotics for Children with Neurodermatitis: What Do the Experiences Show?

More and more studies indicate that probiotics can be a helpful support for neurodermatitis in childhood.

Certain probiotic bacteria – such as Lactobacillus casei or Lactobacillus rhamnosus – can help improve this balance. Studies have observed that this not only improves skin condition but also reduces itching and increases quality of life. Another study showed that the skin improved significantly within a few weeks, and many children needed less cortisone-containing creams.

Probiotics can therefore be a meaningful support for neurodermatitis, especially in children. Particularly in children with co-existing allergies, such as to cow's milk, probiotics could offer additional benefits. Their positive influence on the balance of gut and skin flora, the immune system, and inflammation regulation makes them an exciting addition to traditional treatment.

It is important to always pay attention to the correct selection of bacterial strains and an age-appropriate dosage. Here you can find more information about taking probiotics in children. Our med Darmbasis powder & capsules are suitable for children and adults and are recommended from the age of 2-3 years.

Are Probiotics Suitable for Preventing Neurodermatitis in Babies?

The situation is different for the preventive administration of probiotics to babies. Despite initial hopes, there is currently no sufficiently robust data to justify a clear recommendation for purely preventive use. However, taking a probiotic specifically tailored for babies after antibiotic therapy and/or vaginal birth/C-section during infancy and babyhood certainly makes sense. Our med Darmbasis drops were specially developed for the particular needs of infants and babies up to approximately 2 years of age and can be easily and uncomplicatedly integrated into daily routine.
