Zinc Ricinoleate: The Natural Solution for Sweat and Body Odor

Perhaps you've already encountered zinc ricinoleate on a deodorant package – but what exactly is it, and why is it so effective against odors?

What is zinc ricinoleate?

Zinc ricinoleate (INCI: ZINC RICINOLEATE) is a chemical compound used as an effective odor absorber in many cosmetic products. It is made from zinc oxide and ricinoleic acid, which is extracted from castor oil. This makes zinc ricinoleate one of the plant-based active ingredients and therefore can also be found in our natural cosmetics.

How does zinc ricinoleate work?

Body odor develops when bacteria on the skin break down sweat, releasing unpleasant-smelling substances. Zinc ricinoleate binds and neutralizes these odor-causing substances before they become perceptible. It does not act as an antiperspirant – meaning it doesn't block sweat production – but rather ensures that emerging odors are reduced or covered in a gentle way.

Unlike many conventional deodorants, which are often alcohol-based and can irritate or dry out the skin, zinc ricinoleate is considered skin-friendly and well-tolerated even by sensitive skin. That's why you'll also find zinc ricinoleate as a main ingredient in our med Deo Stick.

Application in (natural) cosmetics

Zinc ricinoleate is a versatile raw material in the cosmetics industry. It is particularly often found in:

  • Deodorants and antiperspirants – As an alternative to aluminum compounds or alcohol, it provides an odor-inhibiting effect without disrupting the natural skin flora.
  • Creams and lotions – In skin care products, it helps neutralize unpleasant odors while being gentle on the skin.
  • Foot care products – Thanks to its absorbent and odor-neutralizing properties, it is often used in foot creams or foot sprays.

In addition to the cosmetics industry, zinc ricinoleate is also used in household products and air fresheners to reduce unpleasant odors.

Is zinc in deodorant harmful to health?

If you are concerned that zinc is absorbed through the skin, leading to an increase in zinc concentration in the body and long-term harm, we can give the all-clear according to the current state of research. The amount is so small that it has no negative impact on the body's zinc levels. The overall assessment of the risks posed by zinc in skin cosmetics is also extremely positive after extensive scientific testing and safety evaluations.

Zinc as an ingredient in deodorants is therefore not only effective but also skin-friendly and safe.
