What is zinc ricinoleate?
Zinc ricinoleate (INCI: ZINC RICINOLEATE) is a chemical compound used as an effective odor absorber in many cosmetic products. It is made from zinc oxide and ricinoleic acid, which is extracted from castor oil. This makes zinc ricinoleate one of the plant-based active ingredients and therefore can also be found in our natural cosmetics.
How does zinc ricinoleate work?
Body odor develops when bacteria on the skin break down sweat, releasing unpleasant-smelling substances. Zinc ricinoleate binds and neutralizes these odor-causing substances before they become perceptible. It does not act as an antiperspirant – meaning it doesn't block sweat production – but rather ensures that emerging odors are reduced or covered in a gentle way.

Zinc ricinoleate is a versatile raw material in the cosmetics industry. It is particularly often found in:
- Deodorants and antiperspirants – As an alternative to aluminum compounds or alcohol, it provides an odor-inhibiting effect without disrupting the natural skin flora.
- Creams and lotions – In skin care products, it helps neutralize unpleasant odors while being gentle on the skin.
- Foot care products – Thanks to its absorbent and odor-neutralizing properties, it is often used in foot creams or foot sprays.
In addition to the cosmetics industry, zinc ricinoleate is also used in household products and air fresheners to reduce unpleasant odors.
Is zinc in deodorant harmful to health?
